CAROLINE KEEVIL

Calligraphic Artist

I spent much of my early adult life playing with cursive scripts and subsequently trained as a calligraphic artist with the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) and the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI).

For exhibition and sale I like to do experimental work, painting and writing on canvas and cloth combining rich colour with the power of words. I am interested in producing work with many interweaving threads of history, people and place, materials, colour and text. I like my work to be unglazed so it can be read without the complication of reflections. By contrast I enjoy doing intimate pencil and crayon drawn letters.

Commissioned work includes calligraphy and design for invitations, place cards, menus and table plans for weddings, parties and corporate events. I do birthday cards, certificates, mission statements, and family mottos, epigrams, quotations and poems, book inscriptions, logo designs and hand lettering for artwork and more. I also combine my hand lettered work with type for an integrated design for posters and programmes.

I organise calligraphy courses, ARTatCLEVANCY, in the barn on the farm bringing highly respected teachers here with innovative and intensive 5 day residential courses. There are also day classes for beginners and improvers. The barn is available to hire as an exhibition space and for workshops.
