HELEN SIMMONDS

I studied Fine Art at ‘Bath Academy of Art’. Whilst there I won a travel scholarship to study art abroad and with that I went to Amsterdam, where I studied the dutch masters, including the dutch still life painters; these paintings fascinated me.
After graduating I concentrated on painting, and throughout the years of bringing up my children I painted whenever I could! Since 2002 painting has become my main occupation.
I concentrate on still life painting, using a variety of items taken from the kitchen, objects whose shape and colour appeal to me. These are brought into play on the canvas, often combined with fruit. The beginning of each painting is a process of sitting with the objects in front of me, moving them around until a settled, peaceful juxtaposition is reached, then the painting begins.
My work can be seen at the Jonathan Cooper Gallery, London.
