PETER COLLYER

Painter

I paint in watercolour on a small scale. My subject is the landscape of the British Isles, reflecting my interest in its history, its shaping by man and by nature, the working and weathering of the land and its endless interaction with the sea. I try to capture a particular moment, whether it be a quality of light or a weather condition. It’s not meant to be just a view of a scene, but rather how it felt to be there that day: I’m not just describing a view but recording an event.

I have no interested in making marks for their own sake, in fact I try to disguise my brush strokes. I want the viewer to see through the surface of the painting to the moment I have witnessed and recorded, that's what the work is about; the location. If it makes you want to go there to see it for yourself then it has worked.

I also write about my travels and have four illustrated books in print. The first, Rain Later, Good is an account of my travels round the sea areas and coastal stations of the Shipping Forecast. The most recent is Offshore, my personal view of Britain’s islands. Chapters from all four books can be read or downloaded from my website, where there is also a selection of paintings and the latest exhibition information.
