ROGER ELLIOTT
Printmaker
I trained to be an Art Teacher in the 1960s, specialising in three dimensional design, with an emphasis on Ceramics. I taught Art in several schools in Nottingham whilst setting up a workshop to pursue my interest in stoneware ceramics, which were sold through a number of shops and exhibitions. In 1987 my family and I moved to Wiltshire when I become Director of Art at St. Mary’s School, Calne.
Two significant events since coming to Calne have affected my work greatly; one a growing interest in fly fishing, the other joining the Calne Artists when they first came together in 1997. Fishing introduced me to the work of Norman Wilkinson, who used Drypoint to depict fishing and country scenes. As secretary of the Calne Artists, I have participated in their many exhibitions and events over the last ten years.
Since retiring from teaching in 2005, I have been developing a long held interest in Printmaking, especially Drypoint Etching and Wood Engraving. The increased time available for fishing has provided lots of images to develop later into original prints. The range of linear marks provided by these print-making techniques is ideal for evoking the patterns and textures of the countryside themes that preoccupy my current work. Each stage in the print-making process is done by hand to create the final original image. With Drypoint particularly there is such scope for variety in the application of ink, that each print in the edition may be quite different to the next.
