SUZY MILES

Artist

My work, as a visual diary in various media, results from an immediate and emotional response to my surroundings. I enjoy being outside in the Wiltshire landscape, in all weathers and often work in watercolour, acrylics, ink, charcoal or pencil either directly onto large sheets of paper or into sketchbooks to be worked on in the studio. I use small sketchbooks, while travelling, as I would a camera, to record situations, people, animals, cars buses, buildings, in fact anything or anywhere that I happen to be.

I have been involved as an artist for my husband Christopher’s films, including The Virgin and the Gypsy and Priest of Love. Another highlight of my life, was working for the archaeologist, Professor Kenan Erim, as artist in residence during the summer excavations at the ancient Hellenistic city of Aphrodisias in Turkey. Last winter I spent time in India and have incorporated some of my Delhi sketchbook drawings into the hand coloured dry point prints shown below.

In 2006, having practised art without any formal qualifications for most of my life, I graduated from Swindon College with a BA (Hons) Drawing For Fine Art Practice degree, which has greatly enhanced my vision. I joined Calne Artists last summer.

Exhibitions include:

1987: Satberk Hanim Musesi, Istanbul and McAlpine Ancient Art, London in aid of the Aphrodisias excavations.

2006: Rook Lane Gallery, Frome with Calne Artists

2007: Rabley Contemporary Drawing Centre, Marlborough, for Rabley Artists Mentoring Programme and Rajasthan Sketchbook exhibitions.
